The new shekel:

The new shekel is the monetary unit of Israel and together with the Jordanian dinar, it is also the Palestinian National Authority. It is divided into 100 agorot.

The new shekel was adopted in 1985, replacing the shekel, at the rate of 1000 old shekels for each unit of the new currency.

Coins and notes of the New shekel:

We currently find coins of 5 and 10 agorot as a fraction and ½, 1, 2, 5, 10 new shekel.

As for the tickets, the current values are 20, 50, 100 and 200 new.

Did you know?

  • The new shekel is not produced in Israel. Currently, coins are minted at the Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation and the tickets are manufactured in Switzerland.
  • The old shekel suffered a strong and uncontrolled inflation that took place during Israel's economic crisis in the early 1980s.
  • Since January 1, 2003, the new shekel is a flexible currency, with free trade in the forex market.
